Player Preview: Men's Basketball - Freshman

This is the first of a four-part series on the Men's Basketball roster. In this installment, the incoming Freshman.

23 P.J. Hubert
Position: Guard
High School: Mt. Vernon (Fortville); Indiana
Height: 6'5
Weight: 180lbs
Fun Fact(s): Two-time First Team All-Hancock County and All-Hoosier Heritage Conference selection; AP All-State Honorable Mention and Excel Sports Magazine All-State selection; Was a Top-12 Recruit in Indiana; He helped lead Mt. Vernon (Fortville) to a Sectional Title, and through to the 3A Regional Final in Shelbyville, in addition to a 22-3 record.
Projected Playing Time: Some
Role: Depending on how he plays in the pre-season and games like IU-East - as well as how he transitions into the new high-speed offense - we could see Hubert play the same role as a Sean Esposito. In high school he shot .435 from beyond the arc, trying a whopping 131 threes (10th most in the Metro Indy Region). You won't see his name often, but he could pop-up on the stats sheet every few games.

30 Donovan Gibbs
Position: Forward
High School: Iroquois; Kentucky
Height: 6'7
Weight: 215
Fun Fact(s): Region 6 (KY) 2009-2010 Pre-Season Player of the Year; Two-time All-Region 6 selection; Averaged 14.9 points and 9.7 rebounds his senior season; Was recruited by Evansville and Eastern Kentucky; Was a Top5 recruit in Kentucky; McDonald's All-America Nominee
Projected Playing Time: Tons
Role: Gibbs' success is what will determine IUPUI's success this year. Yeah, I said it. We all know what Alex Young and Leroy Nobles can do, but another tall, athletic baller in the lineup could be incredibly deadly for any and all foes.

50 Mitchell Patton
Position: Forward/Center
High School: South Knox; Indiana
Height: 6'9
Weight: 245
Fun Fact(s): Named the Sun Commercial Player of the Year after averaging 19.5 points, 12.4 rebounds, and 4.5 blocked shots (leading the state in total blocked shots with 108); He helped lead South Knox to a 13-11 record, as well as a Sectional Championship twice; Holds the top three blocked shots season totals in South Knox history; Was invited to the Indiana Top 60 work out following the 2009-2010 season
Projected Playing Time: Tons
Role: While Patton is a much-needed post player, he still has a lot to work on to fit into Ron Hunter's offense. Christian Siakam showed a lot of improvement last year, but he isn't as big as Patton. Depending on the speed at which the offense is attempting to run, his appearances will likely fluctuate with the demand. Against fast-moving teams like Ohio and Oral Roberts, his time will be limited; teams like Miami (OH) - who play a much slower game - will see Patton much more.
