Game Review, Game 15: Florida Gulf Coast University

Call it what you will, but the guys picked up an important victory when they traveled to Fort Myers right after Christmas. They now have an opportunity to get to .500 on the season in their 2010 finale against Western Illinois, but let's not get ahead of ourselves. This was a great game for IUPUI, check it out.

Player of the Game: Alex Young, IUPUI
If Alex wants to be a real NBA prospect next year, games like this are going to be common. 23 points (9-13 [69%] FG, 4-4 [100%] FT, 1-2 [50%] 3P), 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 5 steals, 4 blocks, 29 efficiency (0.449/possession), all in 38 minutes. You want a work horse, you got one.

Six Man of the Game: None
No one off the bench had any kind of meaningful impact on the outcome of the game.

Stat of the Game: 53.8%, 23, 10, 1.123, 62.5%, 1.30
Field goal percent, defensive rebounds, steals, points per possession, effective field goal percent, points per shot. All season highs, all very important categories to KEEP high.

Et Cetera...
  • I made sure to take off every single game from now on, I promise.
  • If there were any doubters about Leroy's ability to come back from his ankle injury, they are silenced now.
  • I really hate that I had to work.

Keys To The Game

1) Exploit Their Poor Shooting. (Yes!)
IUPUI pushed FGCU to miss early and often, including taking a fast 8-0 lead early on. They then were able to force 0.94 points per shot, as well as just 0.90 points per possession, and nine more total shots (of which three less were made).

2) Stop Turning The Damn Ball Over, Alex. (Well...)
Four turnovers...BUT!...Five steals and four blocks. Oh, and an efficiency rating of 29 (.449 per possession). Yep, I'll take it.

3) Win Big. (Basically.)
The final total was 13, but the Jaguars were never in doubt as the favorites from the opening tip. This means IUPUI will end their non-conference play with back-to-back emotional victories, one last-second shot and one beat-down. Excellent.

4) 40% FG; 80% FT; 39% 3P. (Yes!)
54% FG; 79% FT; 43% 3P. I set the bar high, hoping for Key #3 to happen, and it did.
