Game Review, Game 16: Western Illinois University

IUPUI extended their longest winning streak of the year to three as they downed Western Illinois 70-55 Thursday night. The Jaguars finish the first half of the season 8-8, getting to .500 for the first time since the second game of the year. Huzzah!

Player of the Game: Alex Young, IUPUI.
Alex had another great game, leading all scorers with 21 & 8...With brochitis. Not bad.

Six Man of the Game: None.
For the second game in a row, no one made a major impact coming off the bench. For either team.

Stat of the Game: 9-15
IUPUI had their worst free throw shooting performance of the entire season

----------

Et Cetera...

  • The first half was a massacre of epic proportions. The second half was a great game. That can't happen anymore. WIU was without their star, so it was extremely hard for them to come back...but that won't be the case all year.
  • One of the big reasons why I love statistics is because they always show up in the end. IUPUI went superhoop crazy in the first half, and it worked. The second half wasn't as fun from deep, and the Jaguars ended up just 33.3% on the night.
  • The intensity that the bench is bringing out-weighs the fact they're not producing a lot. Anthony and Donovan both were crazy pumped up when they came in, which was fantastic to see. (Oh, and Smooth lowered the boom on some kid in the paint. He got called for the charge, but he absolutely decimated the kids face with his shoulder. It was awesome.)
  • With all of the in-fighting at the middle of the Summit League standings, it's extremely important for IUPUI to win the games they're "supposed" to win. The game at IPFW, for instance, is a must-win to keep themselves in the top three (IUPUI, ORU, OAK) in the league. Obviously winning at Oakland would be incredible as well, but it's more important to win at IPFW (and UMKC, SUU, et cetera).

Keys To The Game

1) Shut Down Ceola Clark III (Well...)
Injury sidelined the WIU star, something that came as a shock to me and others. He was supposed to be back from an injury sustained back in early December, but he didn't show up at all.

2) Get To 8-8. (Yes!)
Oh thank God.

3) Keep Up The Hot Shooting. (Halfway.)
Yeah, they did...In the first half. If they had a decent second half, they numbers would've been phenominal. That being said, the Jags are HOT from the floor, and they need to keep it up.

4) 40% FG; 80% FT; 39% 3P. (No.)
50% FG; 60% FT; 33% 3P.
