Game Review, Game 27: North Dakota State, Part Deux

Well, they salvaged a split. Which makes it sound a lot worse than it actually is, I guess, but they did it. Alex played unconsciously, but so did Michael Tveidt for the Bison. They've got some work to do yet, but games like this are important come tournament time.

Player of the Game: Alex Young, IUPUI.
Though he didn't have a great week prior, Alex took over in Fargo. Offensively he went for 24 points on 73% shooting inside the arc, 5 rebounds, and 2 assists. Defensively he had a steal and a career high 5 blocks, and only two fouls. He ended with a game-high effiency of 25.

Six Man of the Game: Stephen Thomas, IUPUI.
Though he didn't start, Stephen came on for 35 minutes and contributed 11 points (4-11 FG, 2-2 FT, 1-2 3P), adding a rebound, two assists, and a steal.

Stat of the Game: 34-8.
From the 15:07 mark of the first half, all the way to 4:28, IUPUI went from trailing 12-7 to leading 41-20, including a 19-0 run.

Et Cetera...

  • I was extremely disappointed in the live feed from North Dakota State. The dang thing wouldn't stop buffering, so I basically watched about 3 minutes of the game for $10. Thanks, guys.
  • Michael Tveidt is the real deal for the Bison. Without him creating and sparking their offense, they are going to be in trouble. Come tournament time though, they are going to be dangerous...
  • Listening to the opposing team's feed, you learn a lot of things...Including just how much some guys can be 'homers'. When Leroy was undercut and simultaneously pushed to the floor while going for a rebound, they cried out in disagreement that he, Leroy, was actually to blame. After he jumped straight up in the air. Sigh...
  • As hard as I was rooting for Southern Utah to upset Oral Roberts, they couldn't pull it off. Right now there is a very interesting thing happening...IUPUI and Oral Roberts will battle for the second seed on February 24th. Though IUPUI holds the half-game advantage in the standings, an Oral Roberts win would give them the tie breaker. ORU has three League games left, two against the bottom two teams (WIU & CENT) and the third against IUPUI. Oof.

Key Matchup: Revisited

Alex Young
vs
Three Point Line
Last year, you'd be foolish to call AY a post player. This year he's channeling his inner Robert Glenn, tearing it up in the paint. He took 18 shots on Saturday, shooting 15 from inside the arc, making 11. That's 73%. From three? 0-3. He defeated the line with 24 points, all coming from within the three point line. I like the sound of that.

Keys To The Game: Revisited

1) Don't Shoot Three Pointers. (Just About!)
Eleven shots from beyond the arc is a hell of a lot better than the 25+ they have been launching of late. While NDST did a better job of forcing more difficult shots, three of the four three-point shooters hit half of their shots (Stephen & Sean were 1-2, Leroy was 2-4).

2) Never Let The Game Be In Doubt. (No.)
Despite going up HUGE in the first half, IUPUI let the Bison hang around, something that was super dangerous. They just couldn't put their foot on NDST's throat. Though it would appear toughing out a strong comeback kept spirits high, that same come back should have never happened. The Jaguars could have won by thirty.

3) Play As A Unit. (Yes.)
I really think Ron has found a solid rotation with the six guys getting 20+ minutes per game. The shots were distributed evenly, and the efficiency ratings were surprisingly close, with not a single player under 5. There was a little bickering back and forth, but when isn't there? Our guys are passionate.

4) 50% FG; 85% FT; 38% 3P. (No.)
51% FG; 94% FT; 36% 3P. See? I know what I'm talking about sometimes.
