SPORTS: Women's Soccer Gets First Win In Dramatic Fashion

by Kelsey Renbarger

Sunday, IUPUI Women’s Soccer team landed their first victory of the season in the final minutes of double overtime against the Eastern Michigan Eagles.

The first win wasn't going to come easy for Chris Johnson's club. Eastern Michigan opened the scoring when Angela Vultaggio beat Kristin Haseley in the 38th, putting the Eagles ahead in a dead-even game. The Jags went into the locker room trailing once again.

In the second half, sophomore midfielder Ashley Doreski wasted no time bringing the Jaguars even, cutting the ball into her left foot and scoring from the just inside of the 16-yard box in the 48th minute.

The two teams remained locked into the second overtime, and the scoreboard still read 1-1 all the way to the 106th minute. It appeared the Jaguars were going to go winless in their fourth attempt at victory, that is, until senior forward Megan Hock was able to flick a corner kick from Kelli Parks inside the near post.

“It was a great driven ball!” said Hock of the assist by Parks. “The kick was perfect.”

IUPUI finished off the few minutes remaining in the match, recording their first win of 2011.

“We pulled together as a team,” Doreski said of the team work shown on the pitch.

An especially notable performance came from goalkeeper Kristin Haseley. The sophomore from Zionsville had her work cut out for her as she turned away all but one of the Eagles 25 goal attempts.

“Wow, that’s a lot,” Haseley when she learned of her 11 saves during the game.

Haseley said the team had a disappointing start but anytime you win in overtime it feels great. As for the winning shot scored by Hock, “Megan works so hard and I am so happy for her.”

The first win of the season for the women’s squad has given hope to Hock for many more. “The streak starts with one,” said the senior from Greenwood, Ind. “I want to keep things in perspective and I hope to better this program."

The Jaguars will play again at Kuntz Stadium this Friday night against Eastern Illinois at 7:00 p.m. As always, admission is free with your valid JagTag.
