IUPUI (1-6-3) managed yet another negative result, falling to the Campbell Fighting Camels (6-3-0) in their second and final match of the Crusader Classic in Valparaiso, Indiana.
The cold from Friday night’s matches followed the Crusader Classic from the field-turfed Brown Field to the all-natural Eastgate Field, but this time there was plenty of precipitation to deal with for the Jaguars and Fighting Camels.
Sloppy play on both sides of the pitch lead to the first goal of the match, scored by Campbell’s Kirsty Meyer. IUPUI's Kristin Haseley came out to smother a Camel cross, but she slipped just before reaching the ball. Her flailing attempt to defend the tap of Meyer was in vain as the ball rolled into the empty Jaguar net in the 24th minute.
Coming out in the second half, IUPUI attempted to flex their muscles and draw even. But after the first ten minutes, it would seem in vain. Campbell’s Ashley Clark intercepted a Jaguar pass at the top of the ‘18, played herself forward, and blasted a shot that ricocheted in off the bottom of the cross bar.
Alicia Brock had something to say with her left foot just a few minutes later for IUPUI. After some nifty work to gain possession, she ran directly at the far post, shuffled beyond her defender, and netted her second goal of the season. But the offense was stuck in the mud from then on.
Campbell had a chance to go up 3-1 with 17:00 to play. A breakaway for CU, following yet another giveaway at the back, was pushed wide of the net on the far side and Haseley was easily beaten. After that close call, the Camels went into bunker-mode, combining more for possession in the midfield than in an attacking mind.
The Jaguars finally open up Summit League action on the road against UMKC and new Summit member South Dakota this weekend.
