IUPUI Men's Soccer team has a national finalist. Sophomore defender Kyle Hyland (16 starts, 19 games played in 2009) most recently assisted the U-19 Columbus Crew's Junior team win the Region II championship.
The Crew Juniors went 2-0-1 in round robin play, opening with a victory over Brookfield (WI) drew against NWI United FC 91 (IN), and finally defeated Everest (OH) 3-1 to advance out of their group. They then defeated Waza FC Black (MI) 3-0, and finally they defeated Kansas City Wizards (KS) 4-3 in overtime.
The final was tied 2-2 after regular time (Crew goals 19' and 70'; Wizards goals 81' and 90'+), but the Crew Juniors were able to capitalize one more time than the Wizards could. The victory earns them a spot in the US Youth Soccer National Championships played July 20-25 at Overland Park Soccer Complex in Overland Park, Kansas.
The Red Zone and Student on Sports wishes Kyle the best of luck in Kansas!
