Player of the Game: Reggie Hamilton, Oakland.
There hasn't been a baller like Hamilton in any IUPUI-played game so far. The dude blew up for 28 points and 7 assists on 10-12 (7-8) shooting. You might say it wasn't fair, but it was a hell of a show that he put on.
Six Man of the Game: Christian Siakam, IUPUI.
His stat line doesn't exactly scream "wow", but he picked up his fourth foul just four minutes into the second half, but still had three rebounds (two offensive) and two points. Normally he just rides the bench after picking up a fourth, but they needed him and he stepped up.
Stat of the Game: 15-23, 65% 3P
Travis Bader went 5-8, Hamilton was 7-8, and Drew Valentine was 2-4. Oh and that Benson fellow added a made superhoop. It was brutal to watch, they couldn't miss.

Et Cetera...
- It's hard to tell what next year's Oakland team is going to look like, but without Benson doing well and with Wright out for the game...they looked good. Bader is a hell of a shooter. Reggie Hamilton is a great cross-breed guard, dishing assists when he needed to, yaknow, when he wasn't shooting 83% from the floor.
- I'm fairly confident Oakland will go undefeated this year in Summit League play. IUPUI and ORU are two very different-styled squads, and they were both unsuccessful in stopping the Kampe Attack. It looks like there might be anywhere from two to five teams within a game of each other for second through sixth.
- Anyone who hasn't been to a game at the O'Rena needs to go. The entire game was super intense thanks to the Grizz Gang and a bunch of other supporters. I hate OU, but you have to give credit where it is due. Those guys know what they're doing.

Key Matchups: Revisited
Guards
Reggie Hamilton & Larry Wright
vs
John Ashworth & Stephen Thomas
I would have to say, Reggie Hamilton more than made up for Larry Wright's absence. Wright was out with an injury, available off the bench if absolutely necessary. IUPUI never got within three possessions in the second half, so he never had to make an appearance. Still, Hamilton had one of the best performances in the League so far.

Keys To The Game
1) Get Keith Benson Uncomfortable (Yes.)
The first time Mitch caught the ball on the perimeter, Benson stayed in the lane and looked to see where he was going to pass. The pass never came, and IUPUI had a superhoop. Benson was never able to really take over the game as Ron Hunter kept rotating his three different-styled inside players at him. He was able to tally five blocks, including one on Alex Young that had both guys smiling.
2) Limit Turnovers and Keep Fouls Smart (Halfway.)
IUPUI had four turnovers. Four. 1-2-3-4. All game. One at 16:52 left 1H (Mitch), one at 11:23 left 1H (Donovan), one at 2:17 left 2H (Alex), and one at 1:31 left 2H (Alex). Unfortunately the refs were foul crazy all night, for both sides, and the Jaguars had a ridiculous 19 by the end of the night. Luckily this time turnovers were a non-factor for the Jag's offense.
3) Momentum, Momentum, Momentum. (In spurts...)
The defecit went from 20 to 10 in just 1:59 (12:18-10:19 2H), but then it hovered around 12 for the rest of the game. Oakland was able to qwell any kind of come back by IUPUI by hitting a ridiculous amount of three pointers.
4) 48% FG; 80% FT; 43% 3P. (No.)
42% FG; 80% FT; 33% 3P. Not horrible statstics overall, but when OU does what they did...these aren't even okay.
Great write-up, Michael. I'm glad your college basketball experience at the O'rena was great, though I know that is hard to balance with the fan experience.
ReplyDeleteIUPUI will hopefully be fine going forward. Joy to watch as well.
IPFW game is huge. They haven't played anyone yet, but they're still playing really well.
