Player of the Game: Alex Young, IUPUI.
Alex absolutely dominated throughout the entire game. He was quick to the basket, forcing SUU to foul him or allow an easy bucket. 27 points, 7 rebounds, 3 steals, 1 assist, 1 block, and just 1 turnover. Not his best game of the year by the stats, but it could have been his most dominating performance.
Six Man of the Game: Anthony Williams, IUPUI.
Though he didn't score from the floor, his six rebounds in ten minutes were good enough for a career high. Smooth has gone from complete bench warmer to solid contributor on a regular basis.
Stat of the Game: 22-0.
IUPUI went on a 22-0 from the 11:06 mark to 1:33. In that time, Ray Jones Jr missed a huge dunk, and SUU just couldn't recover. From the embarrassment? Nah...but it's fun to pretend. (I wish I had video of that miss...Not Top 10 worthy for sure.)

Et Cetera...
- I really wish I could've been in Cedar City for that game, though watching it online was totally worth the $10.
- The guys really, really need to play the rest of the season the way they did in the second half. Defensively they were solid with the press doing its job. Offensively they were efficient and strong, grabbing rebounds and distributing at will. That was a hell of a show they put on.
- I really think IUPUI can beat Oakland, and if they play like they did Saturday they could beat the Golden Griz by 24 like last time.
- My only complaint from the game is that the three freshman really didn't see as much time as I would have liked. Donovan was out there for 10 minutes but he didn't have many touches. PJ needs more time to work on his vision and passing, while Mitch has to increase his speed in the break out.
- Seriously, can someone get me video of that missed dunk? It was a wide open look that hit the rim and bounced away about 35 feet. Come on.

Key Matchup: Revisited
IUPUI Freethrow Shooting
vs
SUU Fouling
I said before that IUPUI would be looking to capitalize on SUU's obvious nack of fouling a lot, and they did. Southern Utah fouled 23 times, sending the Jaguars to the line 34 times. Even missing 10 of those shots, the margin of defeat was absolutely padded by the 24 freebies sunk. Actually, they hit the exact same number of freethrows as two-point shots.

Keys To The Game: Revisited
1) WIN. A. ROAD. GAME. (YES!)
Oh good God, it's about time. The first half hurt my insides, as it usually does, as IUPUI went down as many as 10. But the second half...Oh good golly...47-18. Gosh was that fun to watch. Other second half stats: 65.2% FG shooting, 50% 3P, 13-16 FT; Leroy scored 16, Christian played 18 minutes, the team out rebounded Southern 19-8, and they only committed 4 fouls. WOO!
2) Distribute. (Yes.)
Four starters scored more than 14 points. Four had more than 4 rebounds. Four players had a steal. Three took more than ten shots, three others took more than three. Four had offensive rebounds. Stephen tallied five assists for the second straight game.
3) Get The Subs Good Minutes. (Yes.)
I suggested no one should play more than 33 minutes, and it basically happened. (I like that.) Leroy played 34, Alex 33, and no one else was over 30. Stephen and Christian both were out on the floor for 29 and 28 minutes respectively. Sean started over John, and they had 25 & 21 each. Anthony and Donovan saw 10 minutes each, and both Nicks, PJ, David, and Mitch were out for 2 minutes. Goodness me.
4) 46% FG; 80% FT; 35% 3P. (I'll take it.)
58% FG; 71% FT; 33% 3P.

Video Highlights
SUU couldn't/didn't provide video highlights post-game.
So did I see that right? Espo started for Ashworth?? I really like the idea although it doesnt look like Sean played that well. I think we have lost 2 maybe 3 games this year because our legs were tired at the end of the game. We also probably lost to Princeton last year as well. I realize that Hunter doesnt like to play a lot of guys but cmon!!! I was watching the MSU Purdue game the other night and within 5.00 minutes, each team had played 10 guys - I realize that is the Big Ten but we have to have at least one other guy play some long minutes if we are getting anywhere.
ReplyDeleteScott
I would agree with you there...Sean got the start, and could've picked up some good minutes if he had hit some shots. Instead he took a couple wild ones and got pulled fairly quickly.
ReplyDeleteNext year they'll have a whole new offensive modus operandi with the talent they'll have, especially if Alex leaves with Leroy and John. I think for now they've got to get Mitch and Donovan need to start seeing more minutes each game, and PJ/Espo need to start playing more regularly. All four affect the offensive scheme in a different, positive way, but I feel like they're just totally being under-used.
