Game Review, Game 26: South Dakota State, Part Deux

Well, things just got more interesting. IUPUI fell to SDST 81-70 after playing an absolutely terrible second half. Goody goody, right? Every game is a playoff game as SIX teams could now potentially lay claim to the second seed, but the Jags remain in the driver's seat. Let's look back at this one though, shall we?

Player of the Game: Nate Wolters, SDST.
I've been saying this all year, but Wolters is really freaking good. He was directly responsible for 19 of 30 made buckets, making eight shots and assisting eleven. He added four rebounds, two steals, and a game high efficiency of 28. If Alex ends up leaving before next year, he will be a shoe-in for the Player of the Year.

Six Man of the Game: John Ashworth, IUPUI.
While looking like his senior year might be a little different than he had imagined, John is doing what it takes to contribute. Off the bench he went 4-7 (2-4 2P, 2-3 3P) for 10 points, attempting to spark

Stat of the Game: 53%.
South Dakota State shot an incredible 53% both from two- and three-point range. IUPUI shot "just" 45% and 30% respectively.

Et Cetera...

  • This season is about up-and-down as it gets. Beating Oakland and IPFW, losing to UMKC and SDST.
  • The guys seemed to have absolutely no fire under them, like at the beginning of the season. I have no idea why, but they didn't. When they have no fire, they start taking shots from places they shouldn't. They generally miss the majority of those shots.
  • I wish I could say it were an issue of depth (area behind the basket) messing with them. But if you look at wins and losses, their three-point shooting has been the same. 29.2% in losses, going on average 5.2-17.7. In wins they've gone 6.1-17.9, or 34.0%. So they just make one more shot, on average, in wins. It's just about getting to the hoop. Just look at points in the paint. The number of shots and their inside-outside distribution isn't different, but their location inside the perimeter is. Fifty-eight points in the paint against Oakland last Saturday, and just 24 against South Dakota State.
  • DRIVE THE DANG BALL TO THE HOOP. WHY NOT?! Sigh...

Key Matchup: Revisited

Nate Wolters
vs
Alex Young
Alex was held in check through the entire game, being forced to take half of his shots from behind the arc. (I mean, how good is a guy who goes for 14 & 6 with 2 blocks and 2 assists and you say he "underperformed...) Wolters on the other hand drove at will to the bucket and distributed at will.

Keys To The Game: Revisited

1) Don't Allow A Bunch Of Superhoops. (No.)
Shooting 17 superhoops isn't a TON, but when you hit over half of them it immediately seems a lot worse. Everyone knows that against the zone it is important to take your open looks because hesitation might mean a quick double-team. Despite limited open looks, SDST seems to be able to hit at will against the Jaguars. Every game.

2) Drive The Ball Inside. (No.)
Though they started to drive it in the beginning, the Jags quickly went right back into November form. Coach Hunter told IUPUIJags.com, “For whatever reason, we reverted back to earlier in the season and had a huge lull on offense. We lost our aggressiveness and stopped going to the basket. We’re not a great jump shooting team, so that played right into their hands.” Not good.

3) Win. (No.)
It would've been nice. Despite going down 22 points with 8:26 to go, they fought back with a 17-6 run. That's as close as it would get, but they made it interesting. ARGH!

4) 45% FG; 85% FT; 38% 3P. (No.)
45% FG; 100% FT; 30% FT. Unfortuately they were doing MUCH better than that in the first 22 minutes.
