Saturday, Oct. 8 the Men’s Soccer team continued a two game winning streak with a 1-0 victory over conference opponent, UMKC. The high intensity game was tied until senior Galen Cassady put up the winning goal for the Jaguars in the 83rd minute.

Defensive pressure by the Jaguars caused the Roos goalkeeper, Kyle Martin to mishandle the corner kick by IUPUI defender, Kyle Hyland.

“We were in the right position,” said Cassady. “It was a play that put us in the correct position to score, I just kicked it in.”  Running to the sideline, Cassady blew a kiss to his mother, Crystal Cartmell in the stands.

After facing trouble on the road, the Jaguars have now won two consecutive home games after defeating Butler University early last week.

“I just wanted to win,” Head Coach Isang Jacob said. “I made it clear to the guys that is what I wanted.”

Coach Jacob also credits the fans who came to support the men’s team by adding the atmosphere at Kuntz Stadium Saturday afternoon was wonderful.

With many close saves by IUPUI goalkeeper Tyler Keever, the Jaguars were able to successfully shutout their opponent for the fourth time.

“The defense is playing really well,” said Keever. “It wasn’t just me, the whole team is playing well,” Keever said of the shutout.

During the 13th and 73rd minutes of the game, Keever made close saves to protect the Jags from UMKC points on the scoreboard.

“I had to stay connected while they were down the field,” said Keever. “Its about not letting your focus get away.” The Jaguars ended the day with six total saves, five from Keever with the sixth being a team effort.

Both teams attempted time after time to put points on the scoreboard as each team ended the day with a total of 13 shots. Six corner kicks by the Jaguars finally proved successful, as the scoreboard read 1-0 with just under eight minutes to play.

The victory over UMKC advanced the Jaguars to 1-0-1 in the Summit League. “The real points that matter are against conference teams,” said Cassady. “It feels great to get our first conference win.”

The Jaguars will play Western Michigan at Kuntz Stadium next Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
