Sunday, the women’s soccer team met conference opponent South Dakota State in a physical match ending with an IUPUI loss. The Jackrabbits were able to place an early corner kick into the back of the net causing the Jaguars to trail 1-0, a defecit from which they never recovered.

“We have to stop giving up bad goals,” Head Coach Chris Johnson said of the Jaguar loss. “The physicality of the game changes the tone but we have to learn to play through that.”

The physical plays were not being called by the officials, as fans, players and coaches were not in sync with the referee’s lack of foul calls. With only 10 seconds remaining in the first half, Coach Johnson went onto the field illegally to check on an injured player, resulting in a red card being shown and his ejection from the game.

“They didn’t just pick sides,” said Johnson. “Both sides weren’t being called.”

IUPUI, who wore pink in support of Breast Cancer Awareness month, outshot South Dakota State nine goals to eight, but were unsuccessful in converting any of the attempts to points. Both goalkeepers had a total of five saves for the day.

“Saves are saves but I am more concerned with getting points at the other end,” said IUPUI goalkeeper Giselle Guzman. Guzman was continuously tested at the net, as she started her second straight home game for the Jaguars.

IUPUI players Sarah Colby and Chelsi McHenry both made notable efforts at the net with two shot attempts each. Senior leader Alicia Brock gave it all she had in an shot at a Jaguar win.

“We could have been more physical,” said Brock.

With the Jaguar loss, the women’s team fell to an 0-3-1 position in the Summit League advancing the Jackrabbits to 4-0.

“We just need to win,” said Brock. “We have done everything we can.”

With that, the women hope to increase their luck on the road as they face three conference opponents in the next two weeks.

The Jaguars will return home Friday, Oct 28 as they take on conference rival IPFW. The game will be played at Camel High School at 7:00 p.m.
