SPORTS: Women's Soccer Falls To IPFW

by Michael Hadley

A cold October day gave way to an even colder night as IPFW (6-9-1, 3-4-1) defeated IUPUI (3-11-4, 2-5-1) 2-1 at Murray Stadium in Carmel, Ind. on Friday night.

With IUPUI’s normal grounds being primped for the IHSAA Soccer State Finals on Saturday, the Jaguars were forced to migrate north, adopting Carmel High School’s Murray Stadium for their second-to-last game of the 2011 season.

The Mastodons imposed their will on the match early on, testing IUPUI’s sophomore goalkeeper Giselle Guzman from the opening whistle. IPFW amassed seven shots and countless other chances through the first 25 minutes of the game, while the Jaguars had an unimpressive zero.

IUPUI finally got their first scoring chance in the 29th minute when Sarah Wong spun a shot from distance on frame. IPFW’s senior goalkeeper Kristen McFadden swatted away what would have surely been a shocking goal. On the ensuing corner, an IUPUI header was hit several yards off frame.

The visitors finally opened up their scoring sheet in the 34th minute when Arianne Mason took advantage of an impressive corner kick from fellow junior Tylar Allison. The striker let the ball bounce once before flicking it on net with her heel, spinning it beyond the frantic Guzman.

In the second half, IUPUI was able to pull back the goal just 11 minutes in. Ashley Doreski made a run down the far flank, curling a ball in towards Sarah Wong. Wong, playing in a new attacking role, stumbled at an open shot, but recovered fast enough to play the ball back to a wide-open Alicia Brock who blasted a shot beyond the outstretched arms of McFadden.

The ‘Dons would again take a one goal lead in the 63rd minute when Brittany Climmons calmly slide a pass into a sprinting Tara O’Toole. O’Toole easily beat Guzman to the keeper’s left side to regain the advantage.

They would extend their lead as the clock wound down. Mason got free in the box on a free kick, slamming the ball under a sprawling Guzman. A cherry on top for IPFW came from O’Toole in the 90th minute when Aliana Jones played a brilliant ball over the top, leading to an easy put away and the fourth IPFW goal. The three-goal advantage would stand for the last 40 seconds as the Mastodons won their second in a row against IUPUI.

"I think our kids realized that we don't have a chance of advancing on and our effort level wasn't as high as it has been the last couple games," IUPUI Head Coach Chris Johnson said. "A lot of our offensive attack in the first half was pretty nonexistent because we just couldn't connect passes to get down the field."

IUPUI managed seven shots on goal, but IPFW fired an astounding 23.

The Jaguar’s Senior Day festivities will take place Sunday, October 30 when IUPUI takes on Oakland in the regular season finale.
