Key Matchup

Michael Tveidt
vs
Alex Young
These two guys are equally important to their squads, and as they go, their team goes. Young is clearly the better player overall, however Tveidt (pronouced "Tweet" for some reason) isn't someone to ignore. He ranks first or second in points per game, minutes per game, assists per game, field goal percent, three point percent, steals per game, and assists to turnovers. The better player (best illustrated by the "efficiency rating) in the game will be on the winning team, no doubt. These two guys are catalysts.

Keys To The Game

1) Speed The Game Up.
IUPUI has been playing at a snail's pace all season, averaging barely under 65 possesions per game. Ironically, that mark (65) is a very serious marker of the way the Jaguars have performed. When they have less than 65 possessions, IUPUI is a meager 3-7, scoring 61.1 points in 60.7 possessions per game. When they have more than 65 possessions, their record jumps to 6-2, scoring 74.1 points on 67.5 possessions per game. ASsistant Coach Matt Whinrey told me after the Duquesne loss they needed to push the ball more and play at a faster tempo, among other things. The numbers support everything he said.

2) Start The Weekend Strong.
Winning both games (NDST & SDST) would put IUPUI atop "the rest" (everyone but Oakland) in the Summit League Standings. With UMKC, Southern Utah, and Western Illinois following the home games against the Dakotas, the Jaguars could potentially go 6-1 in the month of January. The RPI and general eye-ball test says the month gets easier with each game, and the Jags have got to keep it rolling.

3) Feed Leroy The Ball.
"You know when I get hot, get out of the way." After the Ohio and IPFW games, both of which Leroy had a major run to get the Jaguars back in after trailing big, Roy was pumped up. As Corey pointed out, his performance in wins is ridiculously good, as compared to his performance in losses which is laughably bad. Get him to heat up. I want to hear Scott McCauley yell "HE'S ON FIRE" like they used to in NBA Jam.

4) 45% FG; 80% FT; 40% 3P.
