Game Review, Game 21: UMKC

IUPUI went out to Kansas City to start their three-game trip and played ten minutes of bonus basketball. Bad news, they gave up an 11 point lead on the way, and ended up losing in double-OT. It was my first time at Swinney Recreation Center, and hopefully not the last. Except I want to see the American Jazz Museum next time.

Player of the Game: Jay Couisnard, UMKC.
He went just 3-8 from the line, but Couisnard's insanely tough presence in the post - and total posterization of Smooth in overtime - showed just how good this kid is. 27 points and 12 rebounds in a game-high 49 minutes. He fouled out with 1:29 left in the second OT.
At least the food was really good.

Six Man of the Game: None.

Stat of the Game: 3-13 FG, 1-5 3P, 11-11 FT
IUPUI had one of the most lopsided stat lines I've ever seen in the two overtime periods. As always, the overall percentages looked about the same, with freethrows (22-25 for the game) saving their tails for a poor shooting performance.

Et Cetera...
Alex receiving treatment during
a media timeout.
  • Like I said on Twitter...Nothing hurts more than driving a really, really long way to lose. I mean, I hate losing at home but this was way worse. On the bright side, there was some really great food out in Kansas City.
  • Alex is still having problems with in-game cramping, though he seems to be playing through it. He received treatment multiple times (see photo) throughout breaks and even when he was subbed out. He had a chance to win the game on a last second shot, but he came up about four inches short. They've got to find a way to lessen his physical output though the whole game. It was obvious how tired he was in the last few minutes of regulation, and in overtime he looked completely worn out.
  • I'm not sure who taught the kids in Kansas City, WHERE THE AMERICAN JAZZ MUSEUM IS, how to keep a beat. Five different areas of the gym had students (no actual student section) doing either the same chant at completely different rates, or five separate chants at the same time.
  • If you find a video of Couisnard's dunk, PLEASE email/twitter/facebook/text/smoke signal it to me. It was sick.

Key Matchup: Revisited

Spencer Johnson
vs
Christian Siakam
Johnson played a more outside-roll, but still tallied nine rebounds. He hit 5-10 three-point shots, including one with :03 left to send the game into overtime. He went 4-6 inside the arc, totaling 24 points, in addition to two assists, one block, and one steal in 48 minutes. Christian was one made bucket away from another double-double, but his foul trouble and four turnovers neutralized his positive impact on the game.

Keys To The Game: Revisited

1) Win Big. (No.)
The Jaguars had an 11 point lead that made UMKC look dead in the water. Suddenly, the Jags were down 1 after a quick 12-0 run by the Roos, and it was too close from there out. After appearing they could close out games (IPFW, NDST, SDST), IUPUI showed they still have a way to go.

2) Force Bad Decisions. (No.)
In the first half, both teams looked bad. The second half took a new tone, as both teams found a groove at one point or another. But did IUPUI force UMKC to make bad decisions? No. Guard Reggie Chamberlain went 2-12 from the floor, but then again Stephen Thomas went an uncharacteristic 0-5. I think it was just an off night overall.

3) Maintain Ball Distribution. (No.)
Alex took 24 shots, scoring over 50% of the team's points through regulation. Take away Leroy's 15 shots and no one else too more than 5...and made more than 4. Alex and Roy took 47.5% of all shots from the floor, making 66.7% of the total shots. The game had 10 extra minutes added on, but the Jaguars barely went over their season average for assists (10.8, 11).

4) 46% FG; 80% FT; 35% 3P. (No.)
39% FG; 88% FT; 29% 3P. Ouch.

Video Highlights

Despite the game being on television, UMKC couldn't/didn't provide video highlights post-game. Nifty, guys.

Oh, Zac Efron didn't play.
And he wouldn't give me his autograph.
