Game Review, Game 28: Southern Utah, Part Deux

Right when IUPUI could ill-afford a break down, they seem to be falling apart. Since the wins over IPFW and Oakland, the Jaguars are a meager 1-2, but could have easily been 0-3. The second half of Thursday's loss to Southern Utah was no different, as the Jaguars collapsed in on themselves like a dying star, sucking all hopes of a second seed in the tournament into places unknown. That being said, there is a ton of work to do, but how about a look back on the game that was...

Player of the Game: Matt Hodgson, SUU.
He didn't have gaudy numbers, but then again no one did all night. Hodgson's importance came from his sheer domination while on the floor. Four blocks, 14 points, and five rebounds. He was unstoppable on the offensive end, and absolutely terrorizing in the paint defensively.

Six Man of the Game: The Whole SUU Bench.
58 points, 19 rebounds, 8 assists, 5 blocks, 3 steals. Wow.

Stat of the Game: 52-28
Southern Utah absolutely destroyed IUPUI, and it was all subs. No one I talked to has ever seen anything like that from Southern Utah, or anyone else they could remember. Total domination.

Et Cetera...
  • I would like to address a very particular segment of IUPUI students, the "Dead Unicorn Society." This is a group known all over campus as the 'flash mob,' or the kids who dress up as something weird and do something weirder. Normally I have no problem with this, they are almost always contained to a particular area of campus doing something goofy and not hurting anyone. But they crossed a line on Thursday night, and I'm calling for a ban of their antics at all IUPUI sporting events. The group dressed up as "Old Tyme" folks, donning odd dresses and hats, attempting to view the game and make comments such as "jolly good" and other things. While I would never be the first (second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth...) person to turn someone away from a sporting even, particularly a basketball game...but they weren't there to support the team, they were there to mock what we do. They'll say they weren't, but that's exactly it. They came and took up space, just to look goofy. I suppose the thing we are all fortunate for is only a handful actually showed up.
  • This leads me to the bigger issue of student participation. While I don't expect everyone to make cross-country road trips like a couple of us do, coming to a basketball game should be something fun to do, not a place for you to sit and grumble about the people standing in your way. I am beyond sick and tired of students getting a free ticket, DUS included, to take up space in our student section. You don't even have to make a ton (or ANY!) noise, but be there in support of our boys. My goal in creating an official student organization will be to end pointless sitting in the Red Zone by disallowing our section's seats to be obtained by anyone outside of the Red Zone student group. Don't worry, anyone and everyone can join, and it will be completely free to do so. There will only be a few requirements, and one of them will be NO SITTING IN THE STUDENT SECTION DURING THE GAME. There is a whole arena to sit in, so go somewhere else. Oh, and no "flash mobs".
  • WILL YOU PLEASE, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, DRIVE THE BALL TO THE HOOP EVERY SINGLE TIME? IF THE SHOT IS NOT THERE, KICK IT OUT AND TRY AGAIN.
  • Sorry.
  • But seriously, that style of offense has worked all season long. When our guys try to get cute with their attempts, things like this happen.

Key Matchup: Revisited

SUU Three Point Shooting
vs
IUPUI Freethrow Shooting
Though Southern Utah didn't take many (just six) three point shots, they did a fantastic job of spacing them out and only taking necessary attempts. They used the shot fake (where's Bob Knight?) to draw the IUPUI defenders out to the perimeter, especially in the second half. (SUU attempted just one three pointer in the second half.)

Keys To The Game: Revisited

1) Wreck Them. (No.)
Even in the first half, when IUPUI was tearing apart the T-Birds, it didn't feel right. There was a way about the Jaguars that didn't look like a team that was in control, no matter what the score was. If they ball hadn't fallen into our hands nearly effortlessly, I don't think the lead would have been as big as it was.

2) Get Christian The Ball From The Beginning. (No.)
They didn't do much outside-to-in playing. The Jaguars scored only 13 first half points in the paint, followed by just ten in the second half. Like I've said before, IUPUI cannot be successful if they are trying to take mid-to-long range attempts.

3) Run The Ball. (No.)
Six first half fast break points, none in the second half. Only 62 total possessions.

4) 47% FG; 80% FT; 38% 3P. (Yes, but...)
47% FG; 79% FT; 39% 3P. Their numbers were fairly good, but defensively the figures are more telling. 1.31 points per trip for SUU on 1.33 points per shot. Can't win when you give THAT up.
